How Much Artificial Grass Do I Need?

Quick Answer

Area + 10% waste — ~26.4m² for a 6m × 4m garden

Standard roll widths 2m and 4m. Choose the width that minimises joins and waste

How We Calculated This

  • Garden area: 6m × 4m = 24m²
  • Wastage: 10%
  • Total: 24 × 1.10 = 26.4m²
  • Using 4m-wide roll: 6m length needed = 24m² from roll (minimal waste with one cut)

Roll Width Planning

Artificial grass comes in 2m and 4m roll widths (some brands also offer 5m). Plan your layout to minimise joins:

  • 4m width: Best for gardens up to 4m wide. One piece, no joins
  • 2m width: Better for narrow areas, paths, or when 4m would create excessive waste
  • All joins should run in the same direction as the pile leans

Sub-Base Requirements

  1. Remove existing turf/topsoil to 75–100mm depth
  2. Lay weed membrane
  3. Compact 50–75mm of MOT Type 1 or granite dust
  4. Top with 10–15mm of sharp sand or granite dust, levelled
  5. Lay artificial grass on top

Cost Guide (2026)

  • Budget grass (25–30mm pile): £8–£15/m²
  • Mid-range (30–37mm pile): £15–£25/m²
  • Premium (37–45mm pile): £25–£40/m²
  • Professional installation: £50–£80/m² (supply, sub-base, and fit)

Accessories Needed

  • Joining tape: For seams between rolls
  • Adhesive: For bonding tape
  • Fixing pins: U-shaped galvanised pins, every 200–300mm around edges
  • Kiln-dried sand infill: 4–6 kg/m² for stability and pile support
