How Much Block Paving Do I Need?

Quick Answer

~50 blocks per m² (200×100mm). 20m² drive = ~1,000 blocks + 5% waste

Based on: Standard 200mm × 100mm × 50mm blocks in herringbone pattern

How We Calculated This

  • Standard block size: 200mm × 100mm = 0.02m² per block
  • Blocks per m²: 1 ÷ 0.02 = 50 blocks
  • 20m² driveway: 20 × 50 = 1,000 blocks
  • Plus 5% cutting waste: 1,000 + 50 = 1,050 blocks

Blocks Per m² by Size

  • 200 × 100mm (standard): 50 blocks/m²
  • 200 × 133mm: ~38 blocks/m²
  • 200 × 200mm: 25 blocks/m²
  • 210 × 140mm: ~34 blocks/m²

Waste Allowance

  • Rectangular areas, stretcher bond: 5% waste
  • Herringbone (45°): 5–10% waste
  • Curved edges or circles: 10–15% waste

Sub-base and Laying Course

Block paving needs a proper base:

  1. Sub-base: 100–150mm compacted MOT Type 1
  2. Laying course: 30–40mm sharp sand (screeded level)
  3. Blocks: 50mm or 60mm thick
  4. Kiln-dried sand: Brushed into joints after compaction

Cost Guide (2026)

  • Budget blocks: £15–25/m² (supply only)
  • Mid-range blocks: £25–45/m²
  • Premium blocks: £45–80/m²
  • Professional installation: £60–120/m² (supply and lay)

Planning Permission

Since 2008, if you are paving more than 5m² at the front of your property, the surface must be permeable or drain to a permeable area. Permeable block paving or paving with gaps for drainage satisfies this requirement.
