How Much Ceiling Paint Do I Need?

Quick Answer

A 4m × 3m ceiling needs ~2L for 2 coats

Based on: 12m² ceiling area, matt white ceiling paint at 12m²/L per coat

How We Calculated This

Ceiling paint quantity is simply the ceiling area divided by the coverage rate:

  • Ceiling area: 4m × 3m = 12m²
  • Per coat: 12 ÷ 12 = ~1L
  • Two coats: 1 × 2 = ~2L

Common Room Sizes

  • Small bedroom (3m × 2.5m): ~1.3L for 2 coats
  • Double bedroom (4m × 3.5m): ~2.3L for 2 coats
  • Living room (5m × 4m): ~3.3L for 2 coats
  • Kitchen-diner (6m × 3.5m): ~3.5L for 2 coats

Ceiling Paint vs Wall Paint

Dedicated ceiling paint is formulated to be thicker and less prone to drippingthan standard wall emulsion. It typically has a dead-flat finish that hides imperfections and reduces glare from overhead lighting. You can use standard matt emulsion on ceilings, but ceiling-specific paint is easier to apply overhead.

Textured Ceilings (Artex)

If your ceiling has Artex or other textured coating, increase your paint estimate by20–30% as the texture increases the surface area. Use a long-pile roller (18mm+) to get into all the crevices. For Artex ceilings, a 4m × 3m ceiling would need approximately 2.5–2.6L for 2 coats.

Tips

Paint the ceiling before the walls to avoid splashing finished walls. Work in strips parallel to the window for the best finish. Use an extension pole to avoid working directly overhead from a ladder. If covering stains (water damage, smoke), use a stain-blocking primer first.
