How Much Dot and Dab Adhesive Do I Need?
Quick Answer
A typical 3m × 2.4m wall needs ~1.5 bags (25kg) of adhesive
Based on: 7.2m² wall area, using Gyproc Dri-Wall adhesive at ~0.5 bags per sheet, 3 sheets per wall
How We Calculated This
Dot and dab adhesive (also called drywall adhesive or Dri-Wall adhesive) is applied in dabs to the wall before pressing plasterboard sheets into place:
- Wall area: 3m × 2.4m = 7.2m²
- Sheets needed: 7.2 ÷ 2.88 (2400 × 1200mm sheet) = ~3 sheets
- Adhesive per sheet: ~10–12kg (about 0.5 of a 25kg bag)
- Total adhesive: 3 × 0.5 = 1.5 bags (25kg)
What Is Dot and Dab?
Dot and dab is the most common method of fixing plasterboard to masonry walls in the UK. Dabs of adhesive (typically Gyproc Dri-Wall or British Gypsum GypBond) are applied to the wall in a grid pattern, and the plasterboard is pressed into position. It’s faster than battening and loses less room depth.
Dab Pattern and Spacing
- Perimeter dabs: Continuous ribbon around edges of each board
- Field dabs: 3 vertical rows of dabs per 1200mm-wide board
- Dab size: ~250mm long × 50–75mm wide × 10mm thick
- Minimum contact area: At least 20% of the board area should be bonded
Coverage by Product
- Gyproc Dri-Wall adhesive (25kg): 2–3 boards per bag
- British Gypsum GypBond (25kg): 2–3 boards per bag
- Thistle Bond-It (25kg): 2–3 boards per bag
Tips
Always check the wall is clean, dry, and free of loose material before applying adhesive. Use a spirit level or laser level to ensure the boards are plumb. Allow the adhesive to set for 24 hours before skim plastering over the top. For uneven walls with more than 10mm variation, you may need extra adhesive.
