How Much Dry Ridge Do I Need?
Quick Answer
Ridge length in metres = dry ridge system length needed
Based on: direct measurement. A typical semi-detached house has 5–6m of ridge. Kits sold in 6m or 12m packs.
What Is Dry Ridge?
A dry ridge system mechanically fixes ridge tiles to the roof using clips, rails, and seals — replacing the traditional mortar bedding. Since January 2015 (BS 8612), all new or replacement ridge work in the UK should use mechanical fixings.
What’s in a Kit?
A typical 6m dry ridge kit includes:
- Ridge roll/union: Flexible roll or interlocking sections that span the ridge
- Ridge clips/brackets: One per tile course (approx. every 300mm)
- Batten strap/rail: Secures to the ridge batten
- End caps: 2 per ridge run (hip end or gable end)
- Fixings: Screws and seals
How to Measure
- Measure the ridge length along the top of the roof
- Include any hip ridges if applicable (hip-to-ridge distance)
- Add 5–10% for overlaps and cutting waste
Cost Guide
- 6m kit: £60–120 (depending on brand and tile profile)
- 12m kit: £100–200
- Fitting cost: £40–60 per metre (labour only)
Last updated: April 2026. Ensure the dry ridge system is compatible with your tile profile (e.g., thin leading edge, standard, or large format).
