How Much Picture Rail Do I Need?
Quick Answer
Approximately 12–13 metres for a 4m × 3m room
Based on: room perimeter minus chimney breast/built-in furniture. Fitted at approximately 1.8m height (300mm below ceiling).
How We Calculated This
- Room perimeter: (4 + 3) × 2 = 14m
- Deduct for chimney breast / built-in: ~1–2m
- Picture rail needed: approximately 12–13m
- Add 10% for cutting waste and mitres
Where to Fit Picture Rail
Picture rail is traditionally fitted 250–350mm below the ceiling, at approximately 1.8m height in a standard 2.4m room. In rooms with higher ceilings (e.g., Victorian properties), it can be positioned higher — up to 450mm below the cornice or coving.
Standard Profiles
- Ogee: The classic curved profile with a hook-friendly top edge
- Dado/picture combination: Deeper profile for a more prominent feature
- Material: Typically softwood (pine), MDF, or hardwood. Lengths of 2.4m, 3m, or 4.2m
Fixing Tips
Fix into studs or use appropriate wall plugs. Use panel pins and adhesive for a secure, clean finish. Mitre internal and external corners at 45°. Pre-prime and fill joints before final painting.
