How Much Turf Do I Need?

Quick Answer

Lawn area in m² + 5% waste — ~53 rolls for 50m²

Standard turf roll: ~1m² (typically 610mm × 1640mm). Rolls per m² is approximately 1:1

How We Calculated This

  • Lawn area: 50m²
  • Wastage allowance: 5%
  • Total: 50 × 1.05 = 52.5, round up to 53 rolls

Standard UK Turf Roll Sizes

  • Standard roll: 610mm × 1640mm = ~1m²
  • Large roll (trade): Various sizes up to 1m × 25m

Soil Preparation

Good preparation is essential for a healthy lawn:

  1. Remove existing vegetation and debris
  2. Rotovate to 100–150mm depth
  3. Add topsoil if needed (minimum 100mm depth)
  4. Rake to a fine, level tilth
  5. Firm by treading (shuffle across the area)
  6. Apply pre-turf fertiliser
  7. Lay turf immediately on delivery

Laying Tips

  • Lay in a brick-bond pattern (stagger joints like brickwork)
  • Butt edges tightly together — do not overlap or leave gaps
  • Work from boards placed on freshly laid turf to avoid disturbing prepared soil
  • Water thoroughly immediately after laying — soak to 100mm depth
  • Keep watered daily for 2–3 weeks (especially in warm weather)
