How Much Wallpaper Do I Need for a Room?

Quick Answer

A 4m × 3m room needs ~8 standard rolls (10m × 0.53m)

Based on: 2.4m ceiling height, 4 walls, standard UK roll size, plain or small pattern repeat

How We Calculated This

Wallpaper is sold in standard rolls. The key is working out how many drops (strips) you need from each roll:

  • Room perimeter: (4 + 3) × 2 = 14m
  • Drops needed: 14 ÷ 0.53 (roll width) = ~27 drops
  • Drops per roll: 10m ÷ 2.4m (drop length) = 4 drops per roll (plain paper)
  • Rolls needed: 27 ÷ 4 = ~7 rolls, round up to 8

Standard UK Roll Sizes

  • Standard roll: 10.05m × 0.53m (covers ~5.3m²)
  • Wide roll: 10.05m × 0.70m (some European papers)
  • Double roll (US import): 10m × 0.685m

Pattern Repeat Impact

  • Plain / random match: Minimal waste — 4 drops per roll at 2.4m height
  • Straight match (small repeat, <300mm): 3–4 drops per roll
  • Half-drop match (large repeat, 500mm+): 2–3 drops per roll — more waste
  • Free match / random: No pattern alignment needed, minimal waste

Deductions

Professional decorators typically do not deduct for standard doors and windows when calculating wallpaper — the extra allows for waste and mistakes. Only deduct for very large openings like patio doors or floor-to-ceiling windows.

Tips

Always buy all rolls from the same batch number to avoid colour variation. Order one extra roll as a spare for future repairs. Store rolls horizontally and out of direct sunlight before hanging. Size the walls with wallpaper paste before hanging for easier positioning and future removal.
