When to Choose Each
Choose Ceramic When
- Wall tiling (kitchen splashback, bathrooms)
- Low-traffic areas (bedrooms, en-suites)
- Budget is the priority
- DIY installation (easier to cut)
- Decorative/patterned feature walls
Choose Porcelain When
- Bathroom and kitchen floors
- High-traffic hallways and living areas
- Outdoor patios and paths
- Wet rooms and shower floors
- Underfloor heating (excellent conductor)
Environmental Considerations
Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are made from natural clay and minerals. Porcelain requires higher firing temperatures, using more energy in manufacture. However, its longer lifespan offsets this over time. Both are inert, non-toxic and recyclable as aggregate. UK-manufactured tiles (from Stoke-on-Trent) have lower transport emissions than imported tiles from Italy, Spain or China.
