Which is cheaper — dot and dab or battened wall?

Labour is also faster — an experienced dry liner can dot and dab 30-40 m²/day vs 15-20 m²/day for battened walls. When should I use battens instead of dot and dab?

Use battens when walls are very uneven (more than 15mm out of plumb), when you need to run services behind the plasterboard (pipes, cables), when adding insulation between battens, or when the background is unsuitable for adhesive (e.g. painted or flaking surfaces, damp walls). Battens are also better for hanging heavy items like kitchen wall units.

Can I insulate with dot and dab?

Yes, using insulated plasterboard (thermal laminate) such as Kingspan K118 or Celotex PL4000. These have insulation bonded to the back of the board and are fixed with dot and dab adhesive. For battened walls, you can fit insulation between the battens (typically 50-100mm mineral wool or PIR) and then board over.

Is dot and dab a problem for damp walls?

Dot and dab can trap moisture behind the board and create a hidden cavity where mould can grow. On walls with rising or penetrating damp, battens with a ventilated cavity or a full tanking system is preferable. Building regulations require that the cause of damp is addressed before any dry lining method is used.

Can I hang heavy items on dot and dab walls?

Standard dot and dab walls can support about 20-25 kg per fixing with appropriate plasterboard fixings (spring toggles, hollow wall anchors). For heavier items like boilers, wall-hung WCs or kitchen units, you need to install plywood backing or extra adhesive pads at fixing points. Battened walls let you fix through to the battens for much greater load capacity.
