When to Choose Each

Choose Concrete Tiles When

  • Budget is the primary concern
  • Standard estate or modern property
  • Matching neighbouring properties
  • Low-pitch roofs (down to 17.5°)
  • 50+ year lifespan is sufficient

Choose Natural Slate When

  • Conservation area or listed building
  • Period property restoration
  • Premium new build or extension
  • Maximum lifespan (100+ years)
  • Weight reduction is beneficial

Environmental Considerations

Concrete tiles have moderate embodied carbon from cement production. Natural slate is quarried stone with low processing energy but may have significant transport emissions if imported from Spain or Brazil rather than Welsh quarries. Slate's much longer lifespan means fewer replacements over a building's life. Both materials are inert and recyclable — old slates can be salvaged and reused, while concrete tiles can be crushed for aggregate.
