Pros and Cons
Engineered Wood Flooring
Pros
- + Excellent dimensional stability
- + Works with underfloor heating
- + Can float over most subfloors
- + Often cheaper than solid
- + Available in wider plank widths
Cons
- - Limited sanding (thin veneer)
- - Budget options have very thin veneer
- - Hollow sound if floating
- - Cannot be stained differently if veneer is thin
- - Delamination possible with cheap products
Solid Wood Flooring

- + Genuine solid timber feel
- + Extremely long lifespan
- + Adds property value
- + Can be stained to any colour
Cons
- - Expands and contracts with humidity
- - Not suitable for underfloor heating
- - Needs timber or ply subfloor over concrete
- - More expensive to install
- - Seasonal gaps between boards

When to Choose Each
Choose Engineered When
- You have underfloor heating
- Installing over concrete subfloors
- Wide plank design is desired
- Budget-conscious but want real wood
- Below-grade rooms (basements)
Choose Solid When
- Period property with timber subfloors
- Maximum lifespan is the goal
- You want to sand and refinish many times
- First floor rooms with timber joists
- Premium feel and property value
Environmental Considerations
Engineered flooring uses less hardwood per board (only the top veneer), making better use of slow-growing timber. The plywood base typically uses fast-growing birch or poplar. Solid wood flooring uses more hardwood but lasts longer and can be refinished many times. Both are sustainable choices when sourced from FSC or PEFC certified forests. At end of life, both can be recycled or repurposed.
