Vinyl Flooring Calculator — Sheet Vinyl, LVT Tiles & Planks

Calculate vinyl flooring quantities for sheet vinyl, LVT click tiles or LVT planks. Includes UK standard roll widths and pack sizes.

Room not a simple rectangle? An L-shaped room is just two rectangles: measure each one wall to wall and add it as a section. Use three sections for a T or U shape. The calculator adds every section together.

How We Calculate This

Our vinyl flooring calculator handles both sheet vinyl (sold off a roll by the metre) and LVT tiles/planks (sold in m² packs). For sheet vinyl, we factor in the roll width to calculate the actual length you need to buy.

How to calculate the floor size for vinyl flooring

The starting point for any vinyl order is the floor size in square metres. Measure the room length and width in metres at floor level (walls are rarely perfectly square, so measure to the widest points and take two or three readings along each wall, keeping the largest):

Floor area (m²) = Room length × Room width

For example, a 5.0m × 4.0m room is 20 m². For an L-shaped or irregular room, press Add section and enter each rectangle as its own section; the calculator adds them together for you. Sheet vinyl is cut from the roll per section (each cut rounded up, then summed), and LVT packs are rounded up per section, so a multi-section room never under-orders. The calculator then adds your wastage allowance and converts the area into either the sheet vinyl length or the number of LVT packs to buy.

Sheet vinyl formula

If room width ≤ roll width: Length to buy = Room length × (1 + Wastage %)

Area to buy = Length to buy × Roll width

If both room dimensions exceed the roll width, a seam is unavoidable. The calculator works out both ways of running the strips (along the length and across the width, then the reverse) and picks whichever buys the least vinyl, so the input order of length and width does not change the result.

LVT formula

Packs needed = (Room area × (1 + Wastage %)) ÷ Pack size (m²), rounded up.

Standard UK sizes

  • Sheet vinyl rolls: 2m, 3m or 4m wide
  • LVT tile & plank packs: Typically around 1.8-3.34 m² per pack (e.g. ≈1.77 m² Amtico Click Smart, ≈2.13 m² Quick-Step Alpha, ≈3.34 m² Karndean Knight Tile) — coverage varies widely by brand and range, so use the Custom option to enter the exact figure from your product page

Sheet vinyl is priced per m² or per linear metre from the roll. LVT is priced per pack or per m². Wastage allowances here (about 10% standard, ~15% for seamed sheet vinyl) are industry rules of thumb rather than fixed standards — always check the specific pack size and your installer’s advice for your chosen product.
