Background Ventilator Calculator — Trickle Vent Requirements
Calculate the number and size of trickle ventilators (background ventilators) required per Approved Document F Table 5.2b for UK dwellings.
Houses and flats have similar trickle vent requirements
Each needs 8,000 mm² equivalent area

How We Calculate This
This calculator determines the trickle ventilator requirements for a dwelling using the minimum equivalent areas specified in Approved Document F (2021 edition) Table 5.2b, which applies to System 1 ventilation (background ventilators plus intermittent extract fans).
ADF Table 5.2b requirements
- Habitable rooms (bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms): 8,000 mm² equivalent area per room
- Kitchens: 8,000 mm² equivalent area
- Bathrooms and WCs: 4,000 mm² equivalent area per room
- Utility rooms: 8,000 mm² equivalent area
Number of vents per room
The calculator divides the required equivalent area per room by your chosen trickle vent size to determine how many vents are needed in each room. Standard UK trickle vent sizes range from 2,500 mm² to 12,000 mm².
The total dwelling equivalent area is also checked against a whole-dwelling minimum to ensure overall ventilation adequacy.
