How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the correct fire door specification based on Approved Document B of the UK Building Regulations, BS 476-22, and BS EN 1634-1. It considers the building type, number of storeys, door location and intended use to recommend the appropriate fire rating, ironmongery and sealing requirements.

How it works

  • Building type: Dwellings, flats, HMOs, commercial and care homes each have different fire door requirements under AD B.
  • Door location: The position of the door within the building determines the required fire rating. Flat entrance doors, stairway enclosures and compartment walls have the highest requirements.
  • Storey count: Buildings of 4+ storeys may require upgraded ratings (FD60) for certain locations.
  • Ironmongery: All components must be CE-marked and tested as part of the fire door assembly to BS EN 1634-1.

Key standards

  • Approved Document B: Fire safety requirements for buildings in England
  • BS 476-22: Fire resistance test for non-loadbearing elements
  • BS EN 1634-1: Fire resistance and smoke control tests for doors
  • BS EN 1154: Door closing devices specification
