How We Calculate This

This calculator checks your proposed accessible toilet dimensions against the requirements of Approved Document M (Volume 2: Buildings other than dwellings, 2015 edition incorporating the 2024 amendments) and BS 8300-2:2018.

Dimension checks (unisex wheelchair WC)

  • Room width: Minimum 1500mm (2000mm if it is the only toilet, para 5.10(e))
  • Room length: Minimum 2200mm
  • Turning space: 1500mm × 1500mm clear floor area (Diagram 18)
  • Door width: Minimum effective clear width per Table 2 — 800mm new buildings, 750mm existing (right-angle approach to a ≥1500mm route); preferably outward-opening (5.10(g))

Grab rail positions

Grab rails are positioned per Doc M Diagram 19. Horizontal rails (including the drop-down rail) are set at 680mm above finished floor level. A drop-down rail is provided on the transfer side at 320mm from the centre line of the WC pan (para 5.10(j)); where the fixed wall rail is set at 400mm from the centre line, no additional drop-down rail is required (5.10(k)). Doc M 5.10(c)/(d) requires both left- and right-hand transfer layouts to be provided across a building’s accessible WCs.
