Kitchen and Bathroom Fitting in the UK

Kitchen and bathroom fitting are among the most popular home improvement projects in the UK, and getting the dimensions and material quantities right is critical. Our calculators cover kitchen unit layouts, worktop measurements, bathroom clearances, extraction rates and tiling costs — everything a fitter needs to plan a job accurately before ordering materials.

Standard UK kitchen base units are 870mm high (with 150mm plinth) and 600mm deep. Wall units sit at 450–500mm above the worktop, which is typically 40mm thick at 600mm or 620mm depth. Our kitchen unit calculator works out base, wall, and tall unit quantities, plus filler panels, plinths, cornice, and hardware from your room dimensions.

UK Building Regulations require mechanical extraction in kitchens and bathrooms. Part F specifies a minimum 60 litres/second for a cooker hood or 30 l/s for a general kitchen extract fan. Bathrooms require 15 l/s intermittent or 8 l/s continuous extraction. The kitchen extraction calculator helps select the correct fan rating based on room volume and Building Regulations requirements.

Bathroom layouts must provide adequate clearances between fittings. A standard bath needs 700mm standing space alongside it, a WC requires 600mm in front and 200mm to one side, and a basin needs 600mm standing space. En-suite bathrooms with a shower, WC and basin require a minimum floor area of approximately 1.6m × 2.1m to meet these clearances comfortably.
