How High Should a Dado Rail Be?
Quick Answer
900mm to 1,000mm above the floor, for a standard 2.4m ceiling
That is roughly waist height, the point where a dining chair back would historically scuff the plaster (hence the alternative name “chair rail”). On taller period ceilings, raise the rail proportionally: 1,000-1,100mm on a 2.7-3m ceiling, and 1,100-1,200mm above 3m. Always measure and mark from the floor at several points and use a spirit level, since floors are rarely perfectly flat.

Worked Example: A Standard 2.4m Ceiling
Most modern UK rooms have a ceiling height of 2.4m (2,400mm). Trade joinery guidance gives a simple proportion rule for dado height: divide the wall height by five, then double it.
- Wall height: 2,400mm
- Divide by 5: 2,400mm ÷ 5 = 480mm
- Multiply by 2: 480mm × 2 = 960mm
- 960mm sits inside the 900-1,000mm range quoted as the standard fitting height for a 2.4m ceiling, so this is where most fitters mark the line
Worked Example: A Taller 2.7m Period Ceiling
Victorian and Edwardian houses commonly have ceilings around 2.7m. Run the same proportion rule through that height:
- Wall height: 2,700mm
- Divide by 5: 2,700mm ÷ 5 = 540mm
- Multiply by 2: 540mm × 2 = 1,080mm
- 1,080mm sits inside the 1,000-1,100mm range for a 2.7-3m ceiling, taller than the 900-1,000mm standard-ceiling height because the rule scales with wall height
Why This Height: The Chair-Back Origin
A dado rail is also called a chair rail, and the name explains the height. The original, purely practical purpose was to protect wall plaster from the backs of dining chairs being pushed against the wall, which naturally happens at roughly waist height. The proportion rule and the fitted-height ranges above both converge on that same waist-height band, which is why it has stayed the convention even in rooms where no chair will ever touch the wall. In classical architectural terms, the dado (including the skirting below and the rail itself) is also read as the “pedestal” of the wall, with the wall above it read as the column shaft, so the height is as much about visual proportion as it is about protecting plaster.
Measure and Mark Before You Cut
Treat the figures above as a target, not a rule to follow blindly on an uneven wall. Mark the height at several points along each wall, then run a long spirit level or a laser line around the room to draw a single continuous pencil line. Fix to that line rather than measuring up from the floor at every stud, since UK floors are rarely dead level from one side of a room to the other. Picture Rail Height: A Different Rule, A Different Reference Point
Picture rail is a separate moulding, fitted much higher up the wall, and it is measured the opposite way round: down from the ceiling, not up from the floor. Trade guidance consistently puts picture rail 300-500mm below the ceiling on rooms with higher, period-style ceilings, roughly the higher end of that range (nearer 500mm) on the tallest rooms and nearer 300mm on more modest ones.
On lower, standard-height ceilings the common convention changes: rather than measuring down from the ceiling, fitters instead align the picture rail with the head (top edge) of the door architrave, so the rail, the door frame tops and any window frame tops all run as one continuous horizontal line around the room. Trade guidance suggests using this door-height alignment whenever the gap between the door architrave head and where the 300-500mm-below-ceiling rule would land is small, roughly 150mm or less, since a small gap reads as an untidy near-miss rather than a deliberate second line.
Worked example on a 2.7m ceiling: 2,700mm − 300mm = 2,400mmfrom the floor at the low end of the range, and 2,700mm − 500mm = 2,200mm from the floor at the high end, so the picture rail would typically land somewhere between 2,200mm and 2,400mm above the floor on that ceiling.
