How Thick Is Plasterboard?

How We Calculated This
Thickness does not change how many boards you need — a 9.5mm and a 15mm board cover the same area — but it does change the weight you carry and the screws you buy. Here is the board count for a standard UK room measuring 3.5m × 4m with 2.4m ceilings, boarded in 12.5mm plasterboard:
- Two walls at 3.5m wide: 2 × 3.5m × 2.4m = 16.8m²
- Two walls at 4m wide: 2 × 4m × 2.4m = 19.2m²
- Total wall area: 36m²
- Board coverage: a 2400mm × 1200mm sheet = 2.88m²
- With 10% wastage: 36 × 1.10 = 39.6m²
- Boards needed: 39.6 ÷ 2.88 = 13.75, rounded up to 14 boards
Allow 5–10% wastage on plasterboard for offcuts around openings. What the thickness doeschange: each 2400mm × 1200mm sheet gets heavier as the board gets thicker (a 15mm sheet is a genuine two-person lift), and the drywall screws get longer with the board — British Gypsum’s fixing rule is board thickness plus a minimum 25mm penetration into the timber, giving 38mm screws for 9.5mm board, 38–40mm for 12.5mm and 44–51mm for 15mm.
UK Plasterboard Thicknesses at a Glance
British Gypsum (Gyproc) and Knauf, two of the biggest UK manufacturers, both make standard wallboard to BS EN 520 Type A in the same three thicknesses:
- 9.5mm— the thinnest standard board and the lightest to handle. Traditionally used on ceilings with closely spaced joists and for bending around curved work. It needs supports at closer centres than thicker boards.
- 12.5mm— the UK standard for walls and ceilings. If a merchant just says “plasterboard”, this is almost always what you get.
- 15mm— heavier duty, with noticeably more mass per board. The extra mass helps acoustic performance, and 15mm is the standard second thickness for fire and acoustic boards in higher-spec partition systems.
- 19mm— sold as plank (e.g. Gyproc Plank 19mm) rather than wallboard, used in floor and separating-wall systems where serious mass is specified.
Standard wallboard from both makers has an ivory face for direct decoration or skim plaster, is classed A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire, and is unsuitable for continuously damp rooms — use a moisture-resistant (Type H) board there.
Ceilings vs Walls: Support Spacing Decides the Thickness
The reason 9.5mm board has fallen out of favour is support spacing. The current NHBC Standards 2026 (Chapter 9.2, clause 9.2.4.3) leave the exact centres to the board manufacturer’s installation instructions, saying only that studs and joists should typically be at no greater than 600mm centres, with noggings where specified. The long-standing good-practice limits per thickness — tabulated in NHBC Standards up to and including the 2025 edition — are:
- Walls: 9.5mm board needs studs at max 450mm centres; 12.5mm, 15mm and 19mm are fine at 600mm centres
- Ceilings: 9.5mm board spans max 400mm (or 450mm with intermediate noggings); 12.5mm spans 450mm (or 600mm with intermediate noggings); thicker 15mm board and 19mm plank can span further — follow the board manufacturer’s fixing spec for the exact centres
Modern trussed rafters and metal stud partitions sit at 600mm centres, which is why 12.5mm is now the default for both walls and ceilings — 9.5mm simply cannot span that far without sagging. If you are re-boarding an older ceiling with joists at 400mm centres, 9.5mm remains a legitimate, lighter-to-lift choice.
Fire and Acoustic Boards: Why 15mm Matters
Performance boards come in 12.5mm and 15mm, and the colour of the face paper tells you what you are holding (per the British Gypsum product data sheets):
- Fire board (pink face) — e.g. Gyproc FireLine, BS EN 520 Type F: glass fibre and other additives in the core improve its cohesion at high temperatures. It is denser and heavier than standard board of the same thickness.
- Acoustic board (blue face) — e.g. Gyproc SoundBloc, BS EN 520 Type D: a higher-density core for better sound insulation — noticeably heavier than standard wallboard of the same thickness.
One caution: a fire rating(30, 60 or 90 minutes) belongs to the tested wall or ceiling system — board type, layers, stud, insulation and fixings together — not to the board alone. Where a wall must achieve a stated fire resistance, follow the manufacturer’s tested system specification (e.g. the British Gypsum White Book) rather than swapping a single board.
Board Sizes and Practical Tips
Thickness is only half the spec — sheets come in a small set of standard sizes:
- 2400 × 1200mm: the UK standard sheet — 2.88m², matches a 2.4m ceiling height and 600mm/400mm stud centres
- 3000 × 1200mm: for taller ceilings — 3.6m² per sheet; 2700mm lengths are also made
- 1800 × 900mm: the handy or lath size — 1.62m², easier to move solo and up loft hatches
Buy tapered-edge boards if the joints will be taped and filled; square-edge suits a full skim coat. Match the screw to the board using British Gypsum’s rule — board thickness plus at least 25mm of bite into the timber (10mm into Gypframe metal): 38mm screws for 9.5mm board (the 32mm screws merchants often sell for thin board bite only 22.5mm into the stud, just short of the minimum), 38–40mm for 12.5mm and 44–51mmfor 15mm. And check the label before lifting — a 15mm SoundBloc sheet weighs over 36kg, a two-person lift under any sensible manual-handling rule.
