First Fix Timber Calculator

Calculate wall plates, studs at centres, noggings per bay, joist hangers and herringbone strutting for first fix carpentry.

Total wall plate length

Total stud partition length

Floor to ceiling

For joist and strutting quantities

Width measured across the joists. Leave 0 to assume a square floor (falls back to √area). One hanger is counted per joist — assumes each joist bears on a wall plate at one end and a hanger at the other; double the hanger count if both ends are hung.

Include herringbone strutting

Cross-bracing between joists, banded by the clear span each joist covers between its supports. None needed up to 2.5m span; one row 2.5–4.5m; two rows over 4.5m (BS 8103-3). For a non-square floor set the Joist Span field to that clear span.

How We Calculate This

This calculator tallies all first fix timber components: wall plates for roof bearing, stud wall framing, noggings, joist hangers and herringbone strutting.

The formula

Studs = (Wall length ÷ Centres) + 1
Noggings = (Studs - 1) × Rows per bay
Herringbone pieces = Rows × (Joists - 1) × 2
Total timber = Sum of all component lengths

First fix checklist

  • Wall plates bedded on mortar and strapped to wall
  • Studs at 600mm centres for plasterboard
  • Noggings at mid-height for plasterboard support
  • Joist hanger at the supported (non-bearing) end of each joist
