How We Calculate This

This calculator determines winder tread geometry for quarter and half-turn staircases and checks it against Approved Document K (England, 2013). It counts risers and treads, derives the walk-line going and the narrow-end width, and flags any value that falls outside the Part K limits.

How the geometry is worked out

Winders: 3 for a quarter turn (90°), 6 for a half turn (180°)
Walk-line: an arc centred on the newel, tangent to the centre line of the clear width (BWF Design Guide 1, supplementing AD K Diagram 1.9). Radius = newel radius + clear width ÷ 2 for stairs under 1m (going at the tread centre); newel radius + 270mm for stairs 1m or wider
Winder going = walk-line radius × angle per winder (radians)
Narrow end ≈ newel radius × angle per winder (50mm minimum)

The walk-line going must be no less than the straight-flight going (AD K para 1.27) and all consecutive winders use the same going (para 1.26). If equal-angle winders give a walk-line going below the straight going, widen the stair, use fewer winders, or use unequal winder angles.

Part K limits (private stair)

  • Rise: 150–220mm per step
  • Going: 220–300mm (and not less than the straight going)
  • 2R + G: 550–700mm
  • Narrow end: minimum 50mm
  • Pitch: maximum 42°; clear headroom minimum 2000mm
