How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the perforated pipe length and trench layout for a drainage field based on percolation test results.

The formula (Approved Document H 2015 §1.44)

Floor area At (m²) = p × Vp × 0.25

Pipe Length = At / Trench Width

Number of Trenches = ceil(Pipe Length / 18m max per trench)

Gravel Volume = Pipe Length × Width × 0.46m granular depth

where p is the number of persons served by the tank and Vp is the percolation value in seconds/mm from the test (AD H §1.34–1.38).

Key requirements

  • Trench spacing: 2m of undisturbed ground between parallel trenches, edge to edge (AD H §1.42)
  • Trench width: 300mm–900mm (AD H §1.42)
  • Granular fill: 300mm of 20–50mm clean stone below the pipe + 50mm above (AD H §1.41–1.42)
  • Pipe gradient: not steeper than 1:200 (AD H §1.40)
  • Min depth: pipe at least 500mm below ground (AD H §1.42)
  • Max trench length: ~18m — common installer practice for even distribution (not an AD H figure)
