What spacing should metal studs be?

Standard spacing is 600mm centres for single-layer 12.5mm plasterboard on each side. For double boarding (fire or sound rated), 600mm spacing is still standard. 400mm centres may be specified for heavier cladding or in high-wind areas.

What stud size do I need?

48mm studs give a 70mm finished wall (with 12.5mm board each side). 70mm studs give 92mm — the most common for domestic partitions as it accommodates services and provides better sound insulation. 92mm studs give 114mm walls for enhanced acoustic performance.

Do I need noggings in a metal stud wall?

Yes, horizontal noggings are needed at board joints (typically at 1200mm height for horizontal boards), at the height of heavy items (radiators, TV brackets, basins), and at dado/picture rail height. Use metal nogging channel or timber noggings between studs.

How many screws per plasterboard sheet?

Approximately 28 screws per standard 2400×1200mm sheet: at 300mm centres around the perimeter and 300mm centres on intermediate studs. Use 25mm screws for single layer, 32mm for the inner layer and 42mm for the outer layer of double boarding.

What is the difference between C-studs and track?

C-studs (also called channels) form the vertical members and have a C-shaped cross section that slots into the track. Track (also called floor and ceiling channel) is U-shaped and is fixed to the floor and ceiling. The studs are not fixed to the track — they are friction-fitted and can be adjusted.
