How We Calculate This

This calculator determines conduit bend dimensions, marking positions, and total conduit length for common bend types used in electrical installation.

Bend Types

  • 90° bend: Gain (deduct) = 2r − πr/2 = 0.4292 × former radius. Total = leg A + leg B − gain
  • 45° bend: Single change of direction; deduct = r × tan(22.5°)
  • Offset: Travel between marks = offset ÷ sin(angle); shrink = offset × (1 − cosθ)/sinθ. Two bends.
  • Saddle: Three bends (60° centre, 30° outers) to clear an obstacle. Centre-to-outer mark spacing = obstacle depth ÷ sin 30° = depth × 2.0 (cosecant multiplier)
  • Kick-back: Small set to bring conduit off a surface

Bend Radius

BS 7671 Reg 522.8.3 (via the IET On-Site Guide) sets a minimum INTERNAL bend radius of 2.5 × the outside diameter — 40/50/62.5/80mm for 16/20/25/32mm conduit. A bending-machine former usually produces a larger radius; this calculator uses typical former radii (confirm against your bender):

  • 16mm conduit: ~50mm former radius (40mm code minimum)
  • 20mm conduit: ~75mm former radius (50mm code minimum)
  • 25mm conduit: ~100mm former radius (62.5mm code minimum)
  • 32mm conduit: ~125mm former radius (80mm code minimum)
