IP Code Structure: IP[Solid][Water]

  • First digit (0-6): Protection against solid objects and dust
  • Second digit (0-8): Protection against water ingress
  • IP20: Indoor dry — typical for indoor switchgear
  • IP44: Outdoor exposed — splash-proof (typical convention)
  • IP65/IP66: Dust-tight, jet-proof — outdoor/industrial wash-down
  • IPX4: Bathroom/pool Zone 1 — splash-proof (Sections 701/702)
  • IPX7: Bathroom Zone 0 — temporary immersion (Section 701)
  • IPX8: Pool Zone 0 — permanent submersion (Section 702)

Environmental locations (indoor/outdoor/industrial) use typical values derived from the BS 7671 Appendix 5 external-influence codes (AD water, AE foreign bodies); always confirm against the assessed external influences for your installation. Bathroom (Section 701) and swimming-pool (Section 702) figures are mandated zone minimums.
