Allowances vary by material and by site, so treat these as starting points rather than fixed standards: timber around 15% (WRAP baseline; framing and studwork commonly 15-20%), plasterboard around 22% (WRAP/Skanska on-site studies report 18-26%), bricks 5% baseline rising to 8-10% for complex bonds and heavy cutting, concrete blocks 5% baseline (MPA Masonry 2023; 3% with good practice), tiles around 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal (BS 5385), insulation around 10%. Pipe (about 8%) and cable (about 5%) are trade rules of thumb with no published standard and vary with run complexity. All rise on renovation work (more cutting around existing structures) and fall with experienced tradespeople and good site management.

Plan carefully and order accurate quantities. Use standard sizes where possible. Store materials properly (undercover, off the ground). Train apprentices on efficient cutting. Segregate waste for recycling (reduces skip costs). Use offcuts for smaller elements. Consider prefabrication off-site for repetitive elements.

Government statistics (gov.uk, "UK statistics on waste") show the UK generated around 59 million tonnes of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste in 2020, with about 93% recovered — so the great majority is recoverable through better segregation and management. WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme) historically published the Net Waste Tool and material waste benchmarks; that tool was retired after WRAP closed its construction programme, but its legacy benchmarks still underpin much of today’s estimating practice.

Difficult site access (narrow lanes, upper floors, restricted parking) increases waste through damage during handling, double-handling, and storage constraints. Materials may need to be cut to fit through access points. Good access planning and using smaller delivery vehicles can reduce this.

Absolutely. Failing to account for waste is one of the most common reasons quotes lose money. Always include a waste percentage appropriate to the material and project type. For competitive tendering, use lower but realistic waste rates and ensure your site management practices can deliver them.
