This calculator determines the quantities for a complete epoxy floor coating system including primer, base coat, optional aggregate and seal coat.
The formula
Primer (L) = Floor area × Primer rate (L/m²)
Base coat (kg) = Floor area × Thickness (mm) × Density (~1.5 kg/L)
Aggregate (kg) = Floor area × 3 kg/m²
Seal coat (L) = Floor area × Seal rate (L/m²)
For a ~100% solids epoxy the wet volume in litres equals area (m²) × thickness (mm), so base-coat mass = volume × resin density. We use ~1.5 kg/L, the representative mixed (Part A + B) density for pigmented/self-levelling epoxy (Sikafloor-264 mixed ~1.40–1.45 kg/L, Sikafloor-161 primer ~1.55 kg/L per their data sheets) and the standard ~1.5 kg/m² per mm trade rule. Densities, primer rates and broadcast quantities vary by product — confirm against the manufacturer’s Product Data Sheet before ordering. BS EN 13813 classifies resin floorings by strength and wear but does not set consumption figures.

For a standard 500µm system: primer at 0.2 L/m², base coat at approximately 0.75 kg/m² (0.5mm × ~1.5 kg/L mixed resin density), and seal coat at 0.15 L/m². Heavy-duty 1mm systems need roughly double the base coat. Always confirm consumption against the specific product data sheet, as densities range from about 1.4 to 1.55 kg/L.
Aggregate (quartz sand or flake) is broadcast into the wet epoxy base coat to provide anti-slip properties and a decorative finish. This calculator assumes a single seeded broadcast at about 3 kg/m², which suits anti-slip texture or a light flake. A full broadcast-to-refusal quartz or flake system (where granules are applied until the resin can absorb no more) uses considerably more — typically 4 to 6+ kg/m² depending on saturation — so increase the aggregate allowance for those systems.
Epoxy floors are typically touch-dry in 12–16 hours and can take light foot traffic in 24 hours. Full cure takes 7 days. Temperature affects cure time — below 10°C curing slows significantly.
No. The concrete must be fully dry with a moisture content below 75% RH (measured by hygrometer). If the slab is damp, apply a moisture-tolerant epoxy primer or install a DPM first.
Pot life is the working time after mixing the two components. As a typical guide, two-part epoxy floor resins have a pot life of roughly 20–35 minutes at 20°C — for example Sikafloor-264 gives about 25 minutes at 20°C (rising to about 50 minutes at 10°C and falling to about 15 minutes at 30°C). The value shown here is indicative and product-specific, so always check the working time on the product data sheet. Pot life shortens sharply in warm conditions, so work quickly and only mix what you can apply within the pot life.
