What is a waste factor in construction?

A waste factor is the percentage of extra material you need to order above the net calculated quantity to account for cuts, breakages, damage, and offcuts that cannot be reused. For example, a 10% waste factor on 1,000 tiles means ordering 1,100 tiles. The waste rate varies by material type and project complexity.

What is the standard waste percentage for bricks?

The industry standard waste factor for bricks is 5% for straightforward walling. This increases to 7-10% for complex designs with many cuts (curved walls, decorative bonds, or numerous openings). Always round up to the nearest full pack/pallet when ordering, as part-packs are rarely available and uneconomical.

Why is the waste factor for tiles higher than for bricks?

Tiles have a higher waste factor (10-15%) because they are more brittle, require more cutting around edges and obstacles, and diagonal layouts increase waste significantly. Large format tiles on small areas produce more waste proportionally. Natural stone tiles can have even higher waste rates due to colour variation and defects.

How can I reduce construction waste?

Minimise waste by: designing to standard material dimensions, ordering pre-cut lengths, using offcuts where possible, storing materials correctly to prevent damage, and planning cuts to maximise use of each piece. The formula
