How We Calculate This
This calculator applies an industry-standard waste percentage to your base material quantity. It uses typical UK construction waste rates for each material type, with adjustments for project complexity.
The formula
Waste quantity = Base quantity × Waste rate ÷ 100
Total to order = Base quantity + Waste quantity
Waste cost = Waste quantity × Price per unit
For 500 roof tiles at 10% waste: waste = 500 × 10 ÷ 100 = 50 tiles, total order = 550 tiles. Goods sold in whole units (bricks, blocks, tiles, plasterboard sheets) round the waste up to the next whole unit; materials ordered by length or area (timber in m, concrete in m³, insulation and render in m²) keep the fractional waste to avoid over-ordering small jobs.

These are trade ordering/estimating allowances (builders’ merchant and price-book convention), not BRE/WRAP measured-waste benchmarks — actual on-site arisings recorded by WRAP and the MPA run higher (around 20% for blocks and 30% for plasterboard). Always round up to the nearest full pack or pallet when ordering, and follow your supplier’s minimum order increments.

A waste factor is the percentage of extra material you need to order above the net calculated quantity to account for cuts, breakages, damage, and offcuts that cannot be reused. For example, a 10% waste factor on 1,000 tiles means ordering 1,100 tiles. The waste rate varies by material type and project complexity.
The industry standard waste factor for bricks is 5% for straightforward walling. This increases to 7-10% for complex designs with many cuts (curved walls, decorative bonds, or numerous openings). Always round up to the nearest full pack/pallet when ordering, as part-packs are rarely available and uneconomical.
Tiles are more brittle than bricks and need cutting around edges and obstacles, so they carry a higher allowance. UK estimating convention is 10% for a standard straight (grid) lay in a rectangular room — this calculator's default. Diagonal and herringbone patterns waste far more (every tile meeting a wall needs an angled cut), so use the Complexity Addition to lift it to 15%, and allow around 20% for natural stone because of colour variation and defects. Large-format tiles on small areas also waste proportionally more.
Minimise waste by: designing to standard material dimensions, ordering pre-cut lengths, using offcuts where possible, storing materials correctly to prevent damage, and planning cuts to maximise use of each piece. Yes. Complex geometry, numerous openings, curved walls, diagonal layouts, and awkward spaces all increase waste. Add 3-5% above the standard rate for moderate complexity, and 5-10% for high complexity. First-time DIYers should add an extra 5% as cutting accuracy improves with practice.
