How We Calculate This

This calculator works out the volume of cavity to fill, the weight of insulation material needed, and the number of injection holes required for blown-in cavity wall insulation.

The formula

Cavity volume = Wall area × Cavity width (m) × Wastage

Material weight = Volume × Installed density (kg/m³)

Injection holes = (Wall length ÷ Horizontal spacing) × (Wall height ÷ Vertical spacing)

For example, a 50 m² wall with a 75mm cavity in EPS bonded bead (installed density 12 kg/m³ per BBA 04/4167): Volume = 50 × 0.075 = 3.75 m³, + 5% wastage = 3.94 m³. Weight = 3.94 × 12 ≈ 47 kg. Bonded bead is supplied loose and priced per installed m³, so order about 4 m³. On the staggered 1m × 1.5m drill pattern, a 2.4m-high wall gives 21 holes per row × 2 rows ≈ 42 holes.

Thermal conductivity (λ) used: EPS bonded bead 0.033 W/m·K (Springvale Ecobead, BBA 04/4167), blown glass mineral wool 0.034 (Knauf Supafil 34), cellulose 0.038 (Warmcel), UF foam 0.040. Achieved U-value is indicative and assumes a typical dense masonry wall — confirm with a full BS EN ISO 6946 calculation.
