How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the required kitchen extraction rate based on room volume, kitchen type and cooking appliance, then checks ducting adequacy and Part F compliance.

How it works

  • Room volume: Length x width x ceiling height in cubic metres
  • Extraction rate: Domestic per ADF 2021 Table 1.1 — 30 l/s where a cooker hood over the hob extracts to outside, or 60 l/s where there is no hood, the hood does not extract to outside, or the extract is sited elsewhere (13 l/s continuous, Table 1.2). Commercial uses air changes per hour as an indicative screen only
  • Effective duct length: Actual length plus ~1.5m per 90° bend (indicative; 1–2m per bend is the common guideline), with a roof termination adding a further bend equivalent
  • Pressure loss: Indicative estimate from duct diameter and effective length, plus a terminal allowance for roof cowls — not a standard-derived figure
  • Fan sizing: Based on the required extraction rate plus a duct-resistance allowance; confirm the fan delivers the rate at the system pressure from its airflow-vs-pressure curve
  • Noise: Indicative estimate from fan type, duct diameter and back-pressure — use the manufacturer's declared sound data

Domestic figures reference Approved Document F Volume 1 (2021), Tables 1.1 and 1.2. Commercial sizing should follow CIBSE Guide B, DW/172 (BESA) and BS EN 16282-1; the air-change figure here is only a rough screen, not a design method.
