Aggregate Calculator — How Much Gravel, Sand or Stone Do I Need?

Calculate aggregate quantities in tonnes and bulk bags for paths, driveways and landscaping. UK standard sizes.

Longest dimension of the area

Shortest dimension of the area

Include wastage allowance

Adds 10% for settlement and uneven sub-grade

10% is standard for most aggregate projects

Include geotextile membrane

Weed membrane under aggregate (recommended)

How We Calculate This

Our aggregate calculator converts your area and depth measurements into weight (tonnes and kg) and quantity (bulk bags and 25kg bags) using the specific density of each aggregate type.

The formula

Volume (m³) = Length × Width × Depth
Weight (kg) = Volume × Density
Bulk bags = Weight ÷ 850 kg
25kg bags = Weight ÷ 25 kg

Aggregate densities we use

  • 20mm Gravel: 1,750 kg/m³
  • 10mm Pea Gravel: 1,600 kg/m³
  • Slate Chippings: 1,500 kg/m³
  • Golden Gravel: 1,600 kg/m³
  • Type 1 MOT: 2,100 kg/m³ (compacted)
  • Sharp Sand: 1,600 kg/m³
  • Ballast: 1,800 kg/m³
  • Building Sand: 1,500 kg/m³

These are conservative supplier averages for loose, uncompacted material — actual bulk density varies by source, moisture and grading (decorative gravels are typically quoted anywhere from 1,500 to 1,800 kg/m³). Always confirm the figure on your supplier’s product page or delivery note. Compacted Type 1 MOT will be denser than loose. Add 10% for wastage, settlement and uneven sub-grades.
