This calculator determines the cut volume, swelled volume, lorry loads and costs for groundwork excavation.

Volume and swell

Cut Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Swelled Volume = Cut Volume × Swell Factor
Typical swell factors: topsoil 1.25, clay 1.3, sand/gravel 1.15, chalk 1.4, rock 1.5. Bulking is variable (moisture, dig method) — verify for your site material.

Lorry loads

Loads are limited by EITHER volume OR weight, whichever fills the lorry first:
Loads = the greater of ceil(Swelled Volume ÷ Volume Capacity) and ceil(Tonnage ÷ Weight Capacity)
Capacities: 8-wheeler ~8 m³ / 20 t, 6-wheeler ~6 m³ / 16 t, artic ~12 m³ / 29 t. Tonnage = Cut Volume × in-ground density (clay ~1.9 t/m³, rock ~2.2 t/m³).
