How We Calculate This

This calculator sizes the sub-base for permeable paving from two requirements, taking the greater of the two: a fixed structural minimum, and the hydraulic storage depth needed for your soil infiltration rate and rainfall intensity.

Structural minimum

For domestic concrete block permeable paving, the minimum structural sub-base thickness is 250mm of 4/20mm coarse graded aggregate, laid in maximum 150mm compacted layers (Interpave/Brett Concrete Block Permeable Paving in Domestic Applications, per BS 7533-103:2026, which superseded the withdrawn BS 7533-13:2009 in March 2026). Increase to 350mm for driveways carrying vans or heavy 4×4s. The calculator never returns less than 250mm.

Hydraulic storage formula

Storage Needed = Rainfall Volume − Infiltration Volume
Hydraulic Depth = Storage Needed ÷ (Area × Void Ratio)
Void ratio for clean angular 4/20 aggregate is typically 30% (CIRIA C753). Where the soil drains poorly (e.g. clay), this hydraulic depth can exceed 250mm and then governs the build.

Materials

Sub-base aggregate tonnage uses a bulk density of 1.8 tonnes/m³ (Mainland Aggregates 4-20mm Clean Stone SuDS datasheet — a conservative ordering allowance; loose open-graded clean stone can be nearer 1.5–1.6 tonnes/m³). The non-woven geotextile covers the base and four sides of the excavation with overlaps at joins.
