Rain Garden Calculator — Filter Media, Ponding & Overflow

Calculate rain garden area, filter media volume, ponding depth, mulch and overflow for SuDS-compliant planting beds.

Roof/paving area draining to rain garden

20% standard (RHS / gov.uk SuDS: vegetated area ≥ catchment ÷ 5). Use 20%+ on clay/low-infiltration soils

How We Calculate This

This calculator determines rain garden sizing, filter media volume, mulch and overflow requirements based on your catchment area.

Sizing

Garden Area = Catchment Area × Percentage (20% standard)
Filter Media = Garden Area × Soil Depth (600mm)
Ponding Volume = Garden Area × Ponding Depth (150mm)

The 20% figure follows RHS rain-garden guidance (multiply roof area by 0.2) and the gov.uk National Standards for SuDS (2025), under which an unlined bioretention feature is deemed to comply where the impermeable area is no more than 5× the vegetated area — so the rain garden should be at least one-fifth (20%) of the catchment it drains.

Storage capacity

Total storage = Ponding volume + (Filter media volume × 30% void ratio). The 30% void ratio accounts for the pore space in the engineered soil that stores water temporarily.
