Why do loft floors need strengthening?

Existing ceiling joists (typically 75×50mm or 100×50mm) are designed to support only the ceiling below and light storage. For a habitable room, the floor must support 1.5 kN/m² imposed load (people, furniture). This usually requires new deeper joists alongside or between the existing ones.

What size joists do I need for a loft floor?

Joist size depends on the span: 175×50mm C16 for spans up to 2.7m, 200×50mm C16 up to 3.2m, 225×50mm C16 up to 3.8m, and 250×50mm C24 up to 4.5m at 400mm centres. These are approximate — a structural engineer should specify based on your exact loading.

Do I add new joists between or alongside existing ones?

New joists are typically added between the existing ceiling joists, effectively halving the spacing from 400mm to 200mm centres. Alternatively, deeper joists can be bolted alongside each existing joist. The method depends on access, services routing and structural requirements.

What is strutting and why do I need it?

Strutting (also called herringbone strutting or solid blocking) is fitted between joists at mid-span to prevent them from twisting or buckling. Building Regulations require strutting at maximum 2.5m intervals. Herringbone strutting uses timber or steel crosses between joists.

What boarding should I use on a loft floor?

Use 18mm or 22mm tongue-and-groove chipboard to P5 moisture-resistant grade. P5 is recommended for loft conversions due to the higher moisture risk. Boards should be screwed (not nailed) to every joist and all edges must be supported on a joist or nogging.
