How We Calculate This
This calculator determines the additional joists needed to upgrade a ceiling structure to a habitable floor, using the sister-alongside method (one new deeper joist fixed beside each existing ceiling joist). The joist sizing assumes the strengthened loft becomes a boarded, habitable-standard floor.
The formula
Existing Joists = floor(Room Length ÷ Spacing) + 1
New Joists = Existing Count (one sistered alongside each existing joist)
Boarding Sheets = ceil(Area × 1.1 ÷ 1.44) — P5 T&G sheet = 2400×600mm = 1.44 m²
Strutting Rows (NHBC 6.4.15): none below 2.5m span, one row 2.5–4.5m, two rows above 4.5m

Frequently Asked Questions
Existing ceiling joists (typically 75×50mm or 100×50mm) are designed to support only the ceiling below and light storage. For a habitable room, the floor must support 1.5 kN/m² imposed load (people, furniture). This usually requires new deeper joists alongside or between the existing ones.
Joist size depends on the clear span. Using TradeCalculator's own Eurocode 5 (BS EN 1995-1-1) span calculations for a domestic floor (imposed load 1.5 kN/m² plus a separate 2.0 kN concentrated-load check, dead-load band up to 0.50 kN/m², 400mm centres): 175×50mm C16 spans up to 3.12m, 200×50mm C16 up to 3.57m, 225×50mm C16 up to 4.01m, and 250×50mm C16 up to 4.34m. These figures assume the strengthened loft becomes a boarded, habitable-standard floor, and they are derived on the same basis as our joist span tables reference page. Wider centres (e.g. 600mm) shorten the allowable span, and a structural engineer should confirm sizing for your exact loading.
This calculator assumes the common upgrade method: a new deeper floor joist is sistered (fixed) alongside each existing ceiling joist, so you add one new joist per existing joist at the same spacing. Some designs instead drop new joists in between the existing ones (halving the centres), or fit a fully independent floor on new wall plates. The method depends on access, services routing and what a structural engineer specifies.
Strutting (herringbone struts or solid blocking) is fitted between joists to stop them twisting or buckling. Per NHBC Standards 6.4.15 and Approved Document A, no strutting is needed below a 2.5m span, one row at mid-span is required for spans of 2.5–4.5m, and two rows (at the third points) for spans over 4.5m. Herringbone strutting is typically 38×38mm timber crosses, or proprietary steel struts.
Use 18mm or 22mm tongue-and-groove chipboard to P5 moisture-resistant grade (BS EN 312). P5 is recommended for loft conversions due to the higher moisture risk. P5 T&G flooring sheets are sold at 2400×600mm (1.44 m² per sheet), so divide the floor area by 1.44 and add a waste allowance. Boards should be screwed (not nailed) to every joist and all edges must be supported on a joist or nogging.
