Why is damp seal coverage lower than normal paint?

Damp seal and stain block primers are formulated to be thicker and more opaque than standard paint, which reduces their coverage rate. They contain high levels of shellac, alkyd resin, or specialist polymers that create an impermeable barrier. Coverage is typically 7-9 m²/L compared to 12-14 m²/L for standard emulsion. This thicker film is what gives them their stain-blocking ability.

How many coats of damp seal do I need?

Two coats are recommended for effective damp sealing. One coat may be sufficient for light water stains, but two coats ensure a complete barrier against persistent stains, nicotine, or tannin bleed. For severe damp staining, apply two coats of a shellac-based product like Zinsser BIN. Allow the first coat to dry fully before applying the second.

Can I paint over damp walls?

You should never paint directly over actively damp walls — the paint will peel and mould will grow beneath it. First fix the source of damp (rising damp, penetrating damp, or condensation). Once the wall is dry or has been treated, apply a damp seal primer before painting. Damp seal is not a cure for damp — it's a barrier to prevent stains bleeding through once the underlying issue is resolved.

What is the overcoat window?

The overcoat window is the time period during which you must apply the next coat or topcoat. For most stain block primers, this is within 16-24 hours. If you exceed this window, you may need to lightly sand the surface for the next coat to adhere properly. Always check the product data sheet — some products require a specific minimum and maximum recoat time.

How We Calculate This

This calculator determines how much damp seal or stain block primer you need based on the wall area and product type. Coverage rates are lower than standard paint due to the thicker, more opaque formulation.

The formula

Primer (L) = (Wall area × Coats ÷ Coverage rate) × Wastage

Tins = Ceiling(Primer litres ÷ Tin size)

For example, 15 m² of stained wall with Zinsser Damp Seal at 7 m²/L, 2 coats: (15 × 2 ÷ 7) × 1.10 = 4.7 L. You'd need 2 × 2.5L tins.
