Damp Seal Calculator — Stain Block Primer Quantities
Calculate damp seal and stain block primer for water-stained, damp, or nicotine-affected walls. Coverage rates, drying times, and overcoat windows.

How We Calculate This
This calculator determines how much damp seal or stain block primer you need based on the wall area and product type. Coverage rates are lower than standard paint due to the thicker, more opaque formulation.
The formula
Primer (L) = (Wall area × Coats ÷ Coverage rate) × Wastage
Tins = Ceiling(Primer litres ÷ Tin size)
For example, 15 m² of stained wall with Zinsser Damp Seal at 7 m²/L, 2 coats: (15 × 2 ÷ 7) × 1.10 = 4.7 L. You'd need 2 × 2.5L tins.
Product coverage rates
- Stain Block Primer: 8 m²/L — general stain blocking
- Damp Seal: 7 m²/L — moisture barrier
- Shellac (BIN): 9 m²/L — severe stains, nicotine
- PVA Seal: 5 m²/L — stabiliser for friable surfaces
