Fence Staining Calculator — Panels, Posts & Both Sides
Calculate fence stain or preserver quantities. Covers both sides, post faces, and end-grain soaking for accurate estimates.
Total linear metres of fence
Standard fence: 1.8m (6ft)
Typically every 1.8-2.4m
Determines coverage rate
2 coats recommended
Standard 5L tins
Recommended for maximum protection
How We Calculate This
This calculator works out fence stain quantities by calculating panel area (both sides if applicable), post surface area (all 4 faces), and end-grain absorption.
The formula
Panel area = Length × Height × Sides (1 or 2)
Post area = Posts × Height × 0.075m × 4 faces
End-grain = Posts × 0.075² m² × 2.0 soak factor
Stain (L) = (Total area × Coats ÷ Coverage) × Wastage
For example, 15m fence at 1.8m high, both sides, 9 posts: Panels = 15 × 1.8 × 2 = 54 m². Posts = 9 × 1.8 × 0.075 × 4 = 4.9 m². Total = ~59 m². At 6 m²/L × 2 coats = 19.7 L + 10% = ~22 L (5 × 5L tins).
