How We Calculate This
This calculator works out fence stain quantities by calculating panel area (both sides if applicable), post surface area (the 3 visible faces of an in-line post), and end-grain absorption.
The formula
Panel area = Length × Height × Sides (1 or 2)
Post area = Posts × Height × 0.075m × 3 faces
End-grain = Posts × 0.075² m² × 2.0 soak factor
Stain (L) = (Total area × Coats ÷ Coverage) × Wastage
For example, 15m fence at 1.8m high, both sides, 9 posts (Cuprinol Ducksback at 5 m²/L): Panels = 15 × 1.8 × 2 = 54 m². Posts = 9 × 1.8 × 0.075 × 3 = 3.65 m². Total = ~57.7 m². At 5 m²/L × 2 coats = 23.1 L + 10% = ~25.4 L (6 × 5L tins).
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, ideally both sides should be stained for maximum protection. Water can penetrate from either side, causing rot. If you can only access one side, prioritise the weather-facing side (usually west or south). Staining both sides doubles the paint needed but significantly extends the fence's lifespan — from 5-10 years to 15-20 years with regular maintenance.
Fence posts, especially the end-grain (cut top), absorb roughly 2× more stain than smooth panel faces. End grain exposes the wood's open cell structure, acting like tiny straws that soak up preservative. This is actually beneficial — posts are the most vulnerable part of a fence (ground contact, exposed tops), so extra stain penetration protects them where it matters most.
Two coats are recommended for best protection. Apply the first coat liberally, let it soak in for 24 hours, then apply the second coat. For new or untreated timber, the first coat will absorb heavily. Some products like creosote substitute are designed as single-coat applications. Always check the product's data sheet for recommended coats.
Late spring to early autumn is ideal — when temperatures are above 10°C with no rain forecast for 24 hours. Avoid staining in direct hot sun (causes too-rapid drying) or when frost is expected. Early morning is best as you have all day for drying. Never stain wet wood — the moisture prevents stain penetration and causes peeling.
Standard fence stain needs reapplication every 2-3 years. Premium products like Cuprinol 5 Year Ducksback claim up to 5 years of weatherproofing before re-treatment. Creosote substitutes last 3-5 years. The south and west sides of a fence weather faster and may need more frequent treatment. If water no longer beads on the surface, it's time to re-stain.
