Cornice & Coving Calculator — Lengths, Adhesive & Mitre Cuts

Calculate cornice and coving lengths, adhesive and mitre cuts for any room. Accounts for doorways and corner types.

Total perimeter of the room

Standard room = 4

e.g. chimney breast

Only full-height openings/archways reaching the ceiling. Coving normally runs over standard doors.

Include wastage allowance

Adds 10% extra for mitre-cut offcuts and breakage

10% standard; use 15% for many corners or ornate cornice

How We Calculate This

This calculator works out the coving (or plain cornice) lengths needed from the room perimeter, applies a wastage allowance for mitre-cut offcuts and breakage, then divides by the coving piece length and rounds up. Coving runs continuously over standard doorways, so a doorway is only deducted for a full-height opening or archway that reaches the ceiling. Mitre cuts are calculated as 2 per corner (one 45° cut on each meeting piece) for both internal and external corners. Adhesive is sized on the actual run length, since offcuts need no extra bonding.

The formula

Effective perimeter = Room perimeter − (Full-height openings × Width)
Lengths needed = ⌈ Effective perimeter × (1 + Wastage%) ÷ Coving length ⌉

Wastage defaults to 10% (UK trade convention); use 15% for rooms with many corners or ornate cornice. With wastage off, the calculator simply rounds the bare run length up to whole lengths.
