Plaster Drying Time Estimator — How Long to Dry?
Estimate how long plaster takes to fully dry based on thickness, temperature, and ventilation. Covers multi-finish, bonding, and one-coat plasters.
Skim coat = 2-3mm, bonding = 8-11mm
Ideal range: 18-25°C
How We Calculate This
There is no British Standard or Building Regulation for plaster drying time — manufacturer Product Data Sheets only quote setting time (when the surface can be trowelled). Paint-ready timing is a trade convention, so this tool gives an indicative estimate: always confirm dryness by uniform light colour (and a moisture meter) before painting. Our model starts from realistic UK trade guidance for each plaster type, then adjusts for room temperature, airflow and any dehumidifier.
The model
Drying time (days) = (Base days + Thickness (mm) × per-mm rate) × Temperature factor × Ventilation factor × Dehumidifier factor
The base days plus per-mm rate floor a thin skim at a realistic minimum (a 2mm skim comes out around 5 days, not 2) — the old “1mm = 1 day” rule under-estimated thin coats.
Key factors
- Thickness: Thicker plaster holds more water and takes longer to dry
- Temperature: Optimal range is 18-25°C. Below 10°C drying slows significantly; below 5°C there is risk of frost damage
- Ventilation: Good open airflow speeds drying; poor ventilation slows it. A dehumidifier (set separately) can speed drying ~30-50% (indicative)
- Plaster type: Multi-finish (skim) dries fastest; bonding/undercoat is thicker and slower
Indicative paint-ready times (20°C, moderate airflow)
- 2-3mm skim on plasterboard: about 5-7 days
- 8-11mm bonding/undercoat on masonry: about 7-14 days
- 13mm one-coat plaster: about 12-18 days
Thick backing coats and lime plaster can take considerably longer (weeks). Cold or humid, poorly ventilated rooms extend all of these.
Setting time (surface)
- Thistle MultiFinish: approx 1.5 hours before finishing (British Gypsum PDS)
- Thistle BondingCoat: sets in approx 3-3.5 hours (~200 minutes, British Gypsum PDS)
Tips for faster drying
- Use a dehumidifier — the most effective and safest method
- Open windows on opposite sides for cross-ventilation
- Maintain room temperature at 18-22°C with gentle background heating
- Do NOT use fan heaters, blow-torches, or other direct heat sources
- Do NOT plaster in freezing conditions
