This calculator estimates all materials for a Venetian plaster finish, including primer, multiple plaster coats, and the protective topcoat (wax or sealer). Each coat has a different coverage rate because the application technique varies — the first coat is applied more generously for coverage, while subsequent coats are thinner and more precise.
The formula
Per coat: Material (kg) = Wall area × Coverage rate (kg/m²) × Wastage factor
For example, 20 m² of polished Venetian plaster: Coat 1 = 20 × 0.35 × 1.10 = 7.7 kg (2 × 5kg tubs), Coat 2 = 20 × 0.30 × 1.10 = 6.6 kg (2 tubs), Coat 3 = 20 × 0.20 × 1.10 = 4.4 kg (1 tub). Total = 5 tubs. Plus wax at 0.04 L/m² = 0.88 L (1 × 1L tin).
There is no British Standard for Venetian or polished plaster, so coverage rates here are typical figures taken from manufacturer Product Data Sheets — fine Venetian from Impera Italia (Stucco Veneziano ≈ 1 kg/m² per coat) and Stucco Italiano (Marmorino Fine ≈ 850 g/m² over 3 coats), medium- and coarse-grain marmorino from Romabio (Marmorino GF data sheet ≈ 15 m² per coat from a 25 kg bucket ≈ 1.67 kg/m² per coat) and Natural Calk (fine C100 ≈ 2–2.5 kg/m² per coat, coarse C200 ≈ 3–4 kg/m² per coat), and wax from Venetian Plaster Artisans (25 m²/L smooth, 20 m²/L textured). (Atova Stucco Marmorino Classico is a fine lime marmorino — its data sheet gives 0.8–1.0 kg/m² total over 3 coats, fine-Venetian weight, not a per-coat rate.) Consumption varies significantly by product, grain and trowel technique — coarse marmorino can use 3–4× the material of fine polished Venetian — so always confirm against the data sheet for your chosen plaster.
Tubs are counted per coat rather than from the combined kg total: tinted or colour-matched plaster is mixed afresh for each coat and cannot be merged across coats, so the tub count can be one higher than ceil(total kg ÷ 5kg).
Frequently Asked Questions
Most Venetian plaster finishes require 2-3 coats. A polished or high-gloss finish needs 3 coats: a thin scrape coat for coverage, a texture/pattern coat, and a final burnishing coat that is polished with a steel trowel. Satin and matte finishes can be achieved with 2 coats. Marmorino (stone effect) also needs 3 coats for proper depth. Each coat is very thin — typically 0.2-0.4mm.
It depends on the product and the finish. Fine Venetian (polished/satin) is light: a 3-coat polished finish uses roughly 0.85 kg/m² total (0.35 + 0.30 + 0.20) and a 2-coat satin finish about 0.65 kg/m², so a 5kg tub covers around 5.9-7.7 m² — these are typical manufacturer figures (e.g. Stucco Italiano Marmorino Fine ≈ 850 g/m² over 3 coats; Impera Italia Stucco Veneziano ≈ 1 kg/m² per coat; Atova Stucco Marmorino Classico, a fine lime marmorino, ≈ 0.8-1.0 kg/m² total over 3 coats). Medium- and coarse-grain marmorino ("stone effect") is much heavier — about 0.8-1.7 kg/m² PER coat (Romabio Marmorino GF data sheet ≈ 15 m² per coat from a 25 kg bucket ≈ 1.67 kg/m² per coat; Natural Calk fine C100 2-2.5 kg/m² per coat), so a 3-coat build is roughly 2.4 kg/m² or more, and coarse grades reach 3-4 kg/m² per coat. Consumption varies 3-4× by grain and technique, so always confirm against the product data sheet, and add about 10% for wastage.
Yes — a dedicated primer or key coat is essential. Venetian plaster needs a slightly textured, even-suction base to adhere properly. Apply a tinted quartz primer (matched to the plaster colour) at 0.12 L/m² and allow 12-24 hours to dry. Applying Venetian plaster without primer leads to patchy adhesion, uneven colour, and difficulty achieving a smooth finish.
Wax (typically a beeswax or synthetic wax blend) gives Venetian plaster its characteristic depth and lustre — it enhances colour, creates a subtle sheen, and provides water resistance. Wax is applied at 0.03-0.05 L/m² and buffed. Sealer is a clear acrylic or silicone liquid that provides water resistance without the glossy effect — it's used for matte finishes where you want protection without shine.
Yes, but it must be properly sealed. Apply a waterproof wax or sealer topcoat and maintain it annually. Venetian plaster is not suitable for direct shower areas (use tiles instead), but it works beautifully on bathroom walls and ceilings away from direct water contact. In high-humidity rooms, ensure adequate ventilation. Some specialist bathroom-grade Venetian plasters are available for wet areas.
