How We Calculate This

This calculator determines the CO₂ equivalent of a refrigerant charge and the resulting F-Gas Regulation compliance requirements including leak check frequency thresholds. It applies the F-Gas Regulation (EU) 517/2014 as retained in Great Britain law, using AR4 GWP values (GB has not adopted the EU 2024/573 reform or AR5 GWPs as of 2026).

Calculations

  • CO₂ equivalent: Charge (kg) × GWP ÷ 1000 = tCO₂e
  • Leak check thresholds (Art. 4): 5, 50, 500 tCO₂e → every 12, 6, 3 months (interval doubled where a leak detection system is fitted)
  • Mandatory leak detection (Art. 5): an automatic leak detection system is compulsory at ≥500 tCO₂e
  • Annual leak estimate: Charge × leak rate (%)
  • Phase-down (GWP ≥ 2500): banned in new stationary refrigeration equipment from 2020 (except sub −50°C applications), and for servicing systems ≥ 40 tCO₂e (reclaimed gas allowed to 2030)
  • Phase-down (GWP ≥ 750): from 1 Jan 2025, banned in GB from new single-split air-conditioning systems containing < 3 kg of F-gas (catches R410A, R407C) — retained Reg 517/2014 Annex III
