- Hardness (gpg): ppm ÷ 17.118 (1 grain/US gallon = 17.118 ppm CaCO₃)
- Daily grains: gpg × daily US gallons (litres ÷ 3.785)
- Regen frequency: softener capacity ÷ daily grains
- Annual salt: total annual grains removed ÷ salt efficiency (≈8,818 grains per kg of salt, from the 4,000 grains/lb regulatory minimum)
Salt usage scales with the hardness actually removed rather than a fixed dose per cycle, so it reflects your real water hardness and volume. Figures are estimates — always follow your softener manufacturer’s salt and programming guidance.

UK water hardness varies hugely by region. London and the South East typically has very hard water (300+ ppm calcium carbonate). Scotland and the North West generally have soft water (under 100 ppm). Softener capacity is measured in grains of hardness that the resin can remove before needing regeneration. One grain per gallon (gpg) equals 17.1 ppm. A typical domestic softener removes 4,000-10,000 grains between regenerations. Daily grain removal = hardness (gpg) × daily gallons used.
Regeneration frequency depends on water hardness and usage. In a hard water area (250 ppm) with a moderate-usage household, a typical 4,000-grain unit regenerates roughly every 3 days; larger units (8,000–10,000 grains) stretch this to 6–7 days. Modern UK metered block-salt units use little salt per cycle — Culligan Harvey uses about 300 g and around 17 litres of water per regeneration, Kinetico Premier around 340–350 g and 20.5 litres.
Salt consumption depends on how much hardness is removed, not on an arbitrary fixed dose. Ion-exchange softeners restore at least 4,000 grains of capacity per pound (0.45 kg) of salt — about 8,800 grains per kg — so annual salt usage scales with your water hardness and volume. A typical hard-water household uses roughly 40–70 kg of salt a year, in line with the trade rule of about one 4 kg block of salt per person per month. As of 2026 block salt costs around £8–12 per 8 kg pack (two 4 kg blocks), cheaper in bulk, so annual salt costs are usually about £50–90.
Softened water is generally safe to drink where the original hardness is below about 400 ppm, though it contains slightly elevated sodium (the UK drinking-water limit is 200 mg/L sodium). British Water’s Code of Practice and WRAS recommend keeping one un-softened mains tap — usually the kitchen cold tap — for drinking, cooking and filling kettles. This is a recommendation under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, not a Building Regulations requirement. Babies and anyone on a medically advised low-sodium diet should use the un-softened tap.
