Part H Drainage Calculator — Pipe Sizing & Gradient

How We Calculate This

This calculator sizes drainage pipes using the discharge unit method, then applies the minimum diameters and gradients in Approved Document H (2015).

Discharge unit method

Each fitting contributes discharge units (DU). The DU values used here are the domestic column of the discharge unit table in BS 5572, withdrawn in 2000 but still the working set in UK practice. BS EN 12056-2 uses the same idea but expresses discharge units in litres per second, so its numbers are not interchangeable with these.

The DU total gives the flow. AD H para 2.33 then sets the floor on diameter: at least 75mm internal for any foul drain, and at least 100mm internal for a drain carrying effluent from a WC or trade effluent. AD H Table 6 gives the matching minimum gradients, which are what deliver a self-cleansing velocity.
