How We Calculate This

This calculator gives indicative requirements for a fabricated steel gate — gate weight, frame section, hinge sizing, post specification and foundation dimensions. Section and bar weights are computed from steel density (7850 kg/m³, per EN 10219 hollow-section mass); the hinge bands, post embedment and foundation sizes are fabricator rules of thumb, not code requirements.

Design considerations

  • Gate weight: Frame + infill, computed from steel section and bar weights; drives the hinge band
  • Wind load: Pressure × area × solidity factor — shown as an indicative figure only; it does not size the foundation here
  • Post embedment: About one-third of total post length, minimum 600mm — a trade rule of thumb, deeper for heavy, exposed or automated gates
  • Foundation: Sized by gate weight (300mm square up to ~100kg, 450mm square above) — for exposed or automated gates have a structural engineer check overturning from wind
