How We Calculate This

This calculator determines block quantities, mortar, wall ties and DPC for blockwork wall construction.

Block count

Net Area = (Wall Length × Height) - Openings
Blocks = Net Area × 10 blocks/m² × 1.1 (wastage)
Standard block face: 440mm × 215mm with 10mm mortar joints.

Mortar

Mortar = Blocks × 1.25 kg (dry ready-mix)
Based on a 25kg bag laying 20 standard blocks at a 10mm joint (Tarmac Multipurpose Mortar, BS EN 998-2) — i.e. 1.25 kg/block including perpends. Result is also shown in 25kg bags.

Wall ties

Ties = Net Area × tie density, where density = 1 ÷ (horizontal spacing × vertical spacing).
At the standard 900mm horizontal × 450mm vertical centres this gives 2.47 ≈ 2.5 ties/m² (PD 6697:2019 to BS EN 1996, minimum for leaves ≥90mm). Where you enter an openings area, the calculator adds densified edge ties at the reveals (max 300mm vertical centres, within 225mm of each reveal).
