What is a tile levelling system?

A levelling system uses clips and wedges to hold large format tiles perfectly flat and level during installation. Clips are placed at tile intersections, and wedges are inserted to apply even pressure. After the adhesive sets (24 hours), the clips are snapped off below the tile surface. Systems like Raimondi RLS and Peygran are industry standards. Essential for tiles over 600mm.

What adhesive should I use for large format tiles?

Use a C2 TE S1/S2 flexible rapid-set adhesive (like BAL Rapid-Flex One, Mapei Keraflex Maxi, or Weber Cerfix). The S1/S2 deformability rating is critical — rigid adhesives can crack under large tiles. Apply with a 12-15mm notched trowel for full bed coverage. Back-butter tiles over 600mm for 100% adhesive contact.

How heavy are large format tiles?

Weight increases dramatically with size: 600×600mm ~8 kg, 600×1200mm ~16 kg, 1000×1000mm ~22 kg, 1200×2400mm ~58 kg per tile. Check that your wall or floor can support the combined weight of tiles plus adhesive. Wall-mounted large format tiles need mechanical fixings in addition to adhesive. Two people are needed for tiles over 1000mm.

Can large format tiles go on walls?

Yes, but tiles over 600×600mm on walls need careful installation. Use rapid-set S2 adhesive, apply to both wall and tile (double buttering), and consider mechanical fixings for tiles over 20 kg. The substrate must be perfectly flat — use a levelling compound first. Maximum recommended wall tile weight is about 32 kg/m² without special fixings.

What grout gap for large format tiles?

Large format tiles typically use 2-3mm grout gaps rather than the standard 3-5mm. Some rectified (precision-cut) tiles can be installed with just 1.5mm gaps. Smaller gaps give a more seamless look but require careful installation. Use an unsanded or fine-sanded grout for gaps under 3mm.

This calculator determines tile quantities, levelling system components, and adhesive for large format tile installations.

The formula

Tiles = Ceiling(Area ÷ Tile area × Wastage)

Clips = Tiles × 4 (one per corner junction)

Adhesive = Area × 5.5 kg/m² (12mm trowel)

For 20 m² floor with 600×1200mm tiles: 20 ÷ 0.72 × 1.10 = 31 tiles. Clips = 124. Adhesive = 20 × 5.5 = 110 kg (5 × 20kg bags).
