The formula
Tiles = Ceiling(Area ÷ Tile area × Wastage)
Adhesive = Area × rate × Wastage, where the rate follows the bed depth (≈ half the square-notch height) at ≈1.2 kg/m² per mm of bed (Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1 data sheet). A 12mm trowel leaves a ~6mm bed ≈ 7.2 kg/m²; large format tiles over 900 cm² must be back-buttered (BS 5385-1:2018), so we use ≈7.5 kg/m² at 12mm. Compare against our reference table of UK tile adhesive coverage rates (kg per m²) by notch trowel size.
Clips are spaced ≈1 per 150–200mm along each grout joint (Rubi/Topps guidance), but each clip sits in the joint and is shared by the two tiles either side — so you charge each tile half its perimeter, not its full edge length. That works out at ≈⌈(width + height) ÷ 400mm⌉ clips per tile (minimum 4), matching the manufacturer benchmark of ~4 clips for a 600×600mm tile and ~5 for a 600×1200mm. Clips are consumed; wedges are reusable, so far fewer are needed.
For 20 m² of floor with 600×1200mm tiles at a 12mm trowel and 10% wastage: 20 ÷ 0.72 × 1.10 = 31 tiles. Adhesive = 20 × 7.5 × 1.10 ≈ 165 kg (9 × 20kg bags). Clips per tile = ⌈(600 + 1200) ÷ 400⌉ = 5, so 31 × 5 = 155 clips (≈7 per m²), plus a small reusable wedge pack.

A levelling system uses clips and wedges to hold large format tiles perfectly flat and level during installation. Clips are placed at tile intersections, and wedges are inserted to apply even pressure. After the adhesive sets (24 hours), the clips are snapped off below the tile surface. Systems like Raimondi RLS and Peygran are industry standards. Essential for tiles over 600mm.
Use a C2 TE S1/S2 flexible rapid-set adhesive (like BAL Rapid-Flex One, Mapei Keraflex Maxi, or Weber Cerfix). The S1/S2 deformability rating is critical — rigid adhesives can crack under large tiles. Apply with a 12-15mm notched trowel for full bed coverage. Back-butter tiles over 600mm for 100% adhesive contact.
Porcelain weighs roughly 24 kg/m² at 10mm thickness (about 2.4 kg/m² per mm), so weight rises sharply with size. At ~10mm porcelain: 600×600mm ~8.6 kg, 600×1200mm ~17 kg, 800×800mm ~15 kg, 1000×1000mm ~24 kg, 1200×1200mm ~35 kg per tile; a slim ~8mm 1200×2400mm slab is ~55 kg. Natural stone and thicker tiles weigh more — always check the manufacturer's data sheet. Check that your wall or floor can support the combined weight of tiles plus adhesive, and use mechanical fixings on walls for heavy tiles. Two people are needed for tiles over 1000mm.
Yes, but tiles over 600×600mm on walls need careful installation. Use rapid-set S1/S2 adhesive, apply to both wall and tile (double buttering / back-buttering), and consider mechanical fixings for heavy tiles. The substrate must be perfectly flat — use a levelling compound first. The maximum tile weight a wall can carry depends on the background, not a single number: BS 5385-1:2018 gives limits per background (for example gypsum plaster carries far less than a cement render or a proprietary tile backer board, and plywood is limited to about 30 kg/m²). Always check the substrate's rated weight capacity before tiling.
Large format tiles typically use 2-3mm grout gaps rather than the standard 3-5mm. Some rectified (precision-cut) tiles can be installed with just 1.5mm gaps. Smaller gaps give a more seamless look but require careful installation. Use an unsanded or fine-sanded grout for gaps under 3mm.
