Tile Pattern Calculator — Waste by Layout Pattern
Calculate tile waste percentage by layout pattern. Herringbone and diagonal need 15% extra; straight grid needs just 10%.
Waste: 10%
How We Calculate This
This calculator adjusts the tile quantity based on the chosen laying pattern. More complex patterns create more edge cuts and therefore more waste.
The formula
Tiles = Ceiling(Area ÷ Tile area × (1 + Pattern waste %))
Cut tiles ≈ Total tiles × Waste % × 0.8
For 15 m² floor with 300×600mm tiles in herringbone (15% waste): 15 ÷ 0.18 × 1.15 = 96 tiles. ~12 of those will be cut tiles.
